Premier League Match Time: Wolves Vs West Ham

Wolverhampton Wanderers are set to host West Ham United in a Premier League match on Saturday afternoon.

Wolves haven't had a victory in their last six games played; they have actually lost four in a row, and are currently ranked just above their Saturday rivals on the points table. A similar run of losses preceded Wolves relegation six years ago, in April of that year.

West Ham had a similar run of losses in their first four matches of the ongoing season, incidentally their worst ever start, but have since settled down, with a win and two draws.

Only goal difference separates the two teams, who have an equal number of points after seven games. In last season's league matches the teams won one apiece, with each team winning the away encounter.

In the game against West Ham on Saturday, Wolves will not have the services of the following players who are sidelined owing to injury: Kightly, Hunt, Zuber and Guediora. Stephen Hunt could play his first game for Wolves. It has been four months since Hunt joinde the Molineux squad. A broken leg that kept Hunt out of action has healed and in the absence of Karl Henry serving a sspension after a red card in the Wigan game, Hunt could partner Kevin Doyle up front.

Mick McCarthy could look to midfielder Matthew Jarvis as the key man against Avram Grant's squad in what is clearly a must-win game for both sides.

West Ham also have injury concerns with the following players yet to recover from their respective injuries: Hitzlsperger, Hines, Collison and Kurucz. Valon Behrami, earlier on the injured list is said to have recovered and could feature in the match against Wolves. Behrami's knee injury kept him out of the last three games.

The following players comprised the starting eleven in the Wanderers' match against Wigan Athletic on October 2: Marcus Hahnemann, Kevin Foley, Jody Craddock, Christophe Berra, Stephen Ward, David Edwards, Karl Henry, Michael Mancienne, Matthew Jarvis, Kevin Doyle, Steven Fletcher.

The substitutes were: George Elokobi, Richard Stearman, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, David Jones, Jelle Van Damme, Wayne Hennessey, Marcus Bent.

The following men were in West Ham's starting eleven in their October 2 match against Fulham: Robert Green, Lars Jacobsen, Manuel da Costa, Matthew Upson, Danny Gabbidon, Pablo Barrera, Mark Noble, Luis Boa Morte, Obinna, Frederic Piquionne.

The substitutes were: Carlton Cole, James Tomkins, Marek Stech, Radoslav Kovac, Junior Stanislas, Benni McCarthy, Herita Llunga.

Indian Premier League - Karmic Cricket

The Indian Premier League is all about big bucks - record prices paid for the legendary players, with Englishmen, Kevin Pietersen and all-rounder, Andrew Flintoff, breaking the bank at $1.5 million each, the sale of media rights clocking over the $1.5 billion mark and the individual coffers of Bollywood and leading Indian industrial heavyweights literally overflowing with rupees and now rands.

What is really exciting, though, is the good karma flowing out of the IPL and its organisers, karma that is arguably only matched in spots by the enormous generosity of the English Premier League - the giant of English football.

Karma - the actions of yesterday predict the events of the future

The true essence of karma is quite simply the actions of yesterday predict the events of the future and with the Indian Premier League's commitment to improving the lives of thousands of people throughout the world via the proceeds of the massively popular Twenty20 carnival; they have every right to anticipate an even bigger following and consequential profits.

South Africa, as the current host nation, has been the main beneficiary of the IPL's inordinate munificence with reports of billions of rands being pumped into the nation's coffers.

Apart from the obvious investment into the tourism sector via international flights, accommodation and transport for the duration of the cricket cavalcade; the organisers have re-defined the act of giving by literally doling out the promise of loot to underprivileged spectators at the game.

Through the IPL initiative, HEAT - Help, educate and teach - five school-going cricket buffs are picked out of the legions of IPL fans at each and every game and given R15 000 towards their education; talk about instant gratification!

Big-hearted sleight of hand

This big-hearted sleight of hand is only a tiny slice of the IPL's pledge against poverty however, they have dedicated R10 million in scholarship funds for struggling South African schools!

Each host city is further allocated 1000 free tickets for kids from battling backgrounds; what a wonderful way of getting the younger set involved in sports.

The IPL, like the English Premier League, is clearly one of the major success stories of sport and both deserve their time in the sun.

EPL's 'Magic Bus' initiative

The EPL has a number of fantastic initiatives including the 'Magic Bus' where cash is raised to aid India's street children by promoting personal and social education through sport and outdoor adventures.

The recent announcement the Premier League will be expanding its' good cause initiative' is good news, indeed, as with the global economic meltdown effectively adding to the ever-increasing burden of NGO's; there are going to be a lot more hungry mouths to feed in the next couple of years and sportsmen and women are clearly doing their bit. We wish them all the very best karma for many years to come!

Our Own Harry Potter

As the season grows by, the challenge grows for the kids in Ashburton Grove. Overcoming the condemning eyes of all, the team has grown from strength to strength. First, winning 2 cups in preseason and then keeping an unbeaten streak while on the way to the top of the table.

Using a comparison to the magical world of Harry Potter, like the kids at Hogwarts, our kids lost their star. What Albus Dumbledore meant and signifies to the school of Hogwarts was what Thierry Henry meant to Arsenal Football Club. With a flick of his wand, Albus always conjures something out of nothing. Similarly, with a flick of his boots, Henry commanded the field with such majestic fare that leaves all in awe. The death of Dumbledore mirrors similarly to the departure of the King at Ashburton. The sense of doom and despair surrounded the Emirates Stadium like a crowd of Dementors camping in Hogwarts.

As the saying goes, for every cloud there is a silver lining. Enter Cesc Fabregas! The Gunner's answer to Harry Potter. The boy genius is the fulcrum of the new team that Arsenal is building. Fabregas gives hope to his teammates with his leadership and vision on the pitch. Like Harry, he is being pushed into the limelight at a tender age. With his raw talent and charisma, he is leading the team from the center of the park. He grows in confidence with every incisive pass and every goal scored build the growing belief that he is indeed the answer; just like every adventure and experience that Harry survives and increases his magical arsenal.

With 6 goals in our excellent unbeaten start to the season, is Fabregas the finished product to lead us on? Is he the boy wonder like Harry? I can hardly wait to see him bringing us to the title this season! Go Gunners!

On Satellite Television Rebroadcast - Piracy and The Law in Nigeria

The growth in the Direct-to-home (DTH) satellite television industry globally is well documented. Nigeria is certainly one of the countries in which such growth is evident and there are at least four major competing satellite television services providers in the Nigerian market. In addition, there is a small but growing number of satellite television enthusiasts who explore the opportunities available for viewing satellite television transmissions without subscription. Generally, there tends to be widespread misconception among the wider populace that satellite television is automatically equivalent to subscription television in ignorance of the fact that there is quite a considerable amount of free-to-air (FTA) transmission available without subscription. It should also be mentioned, however, that some of the enthusiasts do stray beyond simple FTA television into realms bordering on illegality, depending on the circumstances, with the use of some satellite receivers with modified software to watch encrypted material without subscription.

The issue of legality concerning satellite television broadcast and reception in Nigeria is topical currently in light of litigation before the Nigerian courts involving some of the DTH operators in the market and various other parties, especially some cable television service providers. Typically, the DTH operator has paid top dollar for premium content - a prime example being English Premier League (EPL) football - and wishes to protect its revenue stream by avoiding or preventing its dilution as a result of the activities of those who seek to disseminate the same content independently of the DTH. This is more so especially where the DTH operator has paid for exclusive rights. The dissemination, independent of the DTH operator, is usually by some cable service operators who often will obtain the content by satellite and re-broadcast it via cable to their own customers for a fee. In this respect, the main legal issue is whether those distributing such content independently of the DTH operator have the legal right to do so. The on-going litigation in the Nigerian courts between Hi-Media (operators of HiTV) and CTL (a cable services provider) typifies the scenario painted here.

Evidently, where encrypted satellite signals are obtained from the facilities of a DTH operator with exclusive domestic rights and re-distributed for a fee domestically without the DTH operator's authorisation or consent, the rebroadcast is most likely an unlawful violation of the intellectual property rights of the DTH operator. However, Nigerian law is not entirely clear on the question of the legality of the rebroadcast of satellite signals within Nigeria where the signals are broadcast from outside the country of reception, by an operator that does not have domestic broadcast rights and, especially, where the signals are transmitted FTA without encryption. This scenario is also unfolding in Nigeria with the recent complaints lodged with Nigerian authorities by some Middle East & North Africa (MENA) DTH operators, especially Orbit Showtime about the rebroadcast of their signals by some cable service operators in Nigeria. In fact, the question of re-broadcasting of FTA signals is a constant issue of controversy and legal uncertainty in other countries particularly in Europe. For example, there was a recent crack-down in Spain on 'illegal' broadcasters. However, the crack-down seems to have been focused on operators re-broadcasting encrypted content without authorisation whereas it seems that those operators who re-broadcast FTA signals have largely been able to continue their operations as long as they are legally compliant in other respects such as basic licensing requirements and tax responsibilities.

In respect of the situation in Nigeria, the issues turn ultimately on questions of interpretation and application of Nigerian common law and a number of Nigerian legislation including the Copyright Act as amended. It is evidently very likely that the courts will rule that the domestic rights holder of particular content (exclusive rights in the case of EPL football) is able to challenge and restrain any rebroadcast of its own signals without its content or authorisation. It is a different matter if transmission signal for that same content has been obtained from a different source. e.g. a foreign broadcaster of EPL football as opposed to the domestic rights holder. Nevertheless, in such a case the domestic rights holder with exclusive rights may be able to successfully rely on the exclusivity of its own rights irrespective of the source from which the re-broadcaster might have obtained the signal. Potentially, the foreign rights holder may also claim for the violation of its own intellectual property rights.

The least clear legal situation concerns the re-broadcasting in Nigeria of FTA content transmitted or originating from a foreign country. From a wider perspective, there have always been at least two views of this situation. Firstly, the view exists that as long as the domestic re-broadcaster has a suitable broadcasting license and is otherwise in compliance with other relevant law, the re-broadcasting of FTA content is acceptable. Some argue that this explains the activities of some operators in some European countries e.g. Spain, Switzerland etc, where the re-broadcasting of signals originating from another country, especially the United Kingdom, is a well known phenomenon. The second view is that the re-broadcasting of FTA content without the authorisation of the (foreign) origin at least should always be illegal if it is not already so. Evidently, the rebroadcast involves taking advantage of the intellectual property of the originator but other considerations are also taken into account such as that the originator might itself be geographically restricted in terms of its broadcasting rights and that advertisements may be targeted at a particular country.

It is thought that the ongoing litigation before the Nigeria courts does not directly touch on the question of the re-broadcasting in Nigeria of FTA signals originating abroad. It is hoped that the Nigerian courts will provide clarification on the matter at the earliest arising opportunity.

West Indies Cricket - A Resurgence?

In years to come the last fortnight could well be seen as the moment that West Indian cricket began its rise to regain its former position as one of the pre-eminent sides in the world. And make no mistake world cricket needs a successful and vibrant West Indies team.

Firstly, the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and the West Indian Players Association (WIPA) have finally come to a mutual agreement that will see a first choice squad being selected for the forthcoming tour to Australia. Moreover, the last two weeks has seen an unheralded Trinidad and Tobago side take on and beat all comers in the inaugural T20 Champions League tournament in India.

Even if the side, which has been excellently led by Daren Ganga, fails to repeat its earlier success against New South Wales in the Final today, it is Trinidad and Tobago who will be remembered for lighting up the competition. The team's togetherness, team spirit and refusal to give up lost causes has made them stars. What makes this all the more remarkable is the fact that Dwayne Bravo and Dinesh Ramdin aside, none of the players are considered first choice picks for the West Indies team.

All this suggests that the state of West Indian cricket may not be as terminal as many observers feared. If the spirit and quality shown by Trinidad and Tobago can be replicated by the West Indies Test and limited overs sides then there should be a steep upward curve in their ranking in all forms of the game. This is not to say that West Indian cricket is cured - the WICB still badly needs a restructure and needs to change its style and attitude to the players. Former players such as Michael Holding, Clive Lloyd and Sir Vivian Richards should be given prominent roles in the WICB so that the Board and the team unite in the interests of West Indian cricket. The board needs to recognise that the players need to get access to the riches available to them in English County Cricket and more so in the Indian Premier League. In return the players need to show the same fight and desire that their illustrious predecessors had when wearing the famous maroon cap.

All this won't happen overnight - indeed it may never happen. But hopefully it is the start of a long road to former glories However, now that the impasse with the WICB has been bridged, at least the team can concentrate on preparing for the difficult assignment that awaits them in Australia where the first of a three test series starts in Brisbane on 26th November. Before then the selectors have an interesting task in picking the squad with several Trinidad and Tobago players making a good case for selection as well as Kemar Roach and Darren Sammy from the WICB XI that played in the Champions Trophy.

The first major decision the selectors have to make is who should captain the side. I think we can safely ignore the claims of Floyd Reifer who captained the WICB XI during the dispute between the board and WIPA. This probably leaves two options - Chris Gayle and Ganga. The laconic Gayle, who led the side before the dispute, had overseen an improvement in fortunes with a drawn series in New Zealand preceding the home triumph over England. He also led the team to the semi-finals of the World T20 and stated this week his desire to be reinstated as captain. "If I am asked to do the job I will be committed," Gayle told Reuters. "It is always an honour to captain the West Indies. I am always committed to do it. Support-wise the players have been really good and it shouldn't be a problem. Once I am asked to do it then, definitely."

However, Ganga has impressed many observers with the way he has led Trinidad and Tobago. The raw ingredients of togetherness, willingness to fight for each other and the knack of someone being prepared to stick their hand up when something special is required are just what the West Indies needs. Although Ganga only averages 25.71 from 48 tests and has only scored three centuries, his fearless and vibrant captaincy makes this an interesting conundrum for the selectors. Ganga's ability to unify individuals and make the collective stronger than the sum of its parts should win the day. If so he could bat in the middle order rather than in his usual opening role.

Gayle, along with Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul are obvious picks for the selectors. Trinidad and Tobago's Lendl Simmons and 19 year old Adrian Barath should join them in the squad. The former has shown sporadically over the last year the quality needed at international level and now needs to become more consistent. Barath is an exciting prospect who already averages 46.05 in his first class career and could become the long term opening partner to Gayle at both Test and limited overs level. If the selectors want to pick a seventh batsman then Australian born Brendan Nash would appear to be the most likely.

Dwayne Bravo, who has the potential to become the World's outstanding all-rounder now that Andrew Flintoff has retired and Jacques Kallis continues to get older is a shoo-in, as is Ramdin as wicketkeeper. Kieron Pollard has shown during the Champions League that he has temperament required for the big stage so could be a shrewd pick as cover for Bravo.

This brings us to the bowlers. Jerome Taylor and Fidel Edwards should both enjoy bowling on the bouncy Australian wickets. So should the extremely fast Roach who impressed against Bangladesh and during the Champions Trophy. Ravi Rampaul, Daren Powell and Sammy will all be in contention too. In the spin department, there is not as much strength in depth and Gayle will probably have to provide support to Sulieman Benn, who did reasonably well against England when they toured the Caribbean.

So, the Test squad could end up as follows:

Daren Ganga (C), Chris Gayle, Adrian Barath, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Lendl Simmons, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Dinesh Ramdin, Chadwick Walton, Sulieman Benn, Jerome Taylor, Kemar Roach, Fidel Edwards, Ravi Rampaul and Darren Sammy

There is no doubt that a tour to Australia is probably the toughest assignment of all, but with Ganga at the helm and a group of talented players in the squad the West Indies should at least be able to compete with Ricky Ponting's side. The raw ingredients are there to cause a few surprises even if Australia will likely win the series. Cricket fans around the world hope that this is the start of a new dawn in Caribbean cricket.

Where Did Soccer Originate?

Where did soccer originate? Soccer has originated in England as early as 1800. It was originally played by the aristocrats from the high society. Since the game does not require a lot of money to play, it slowly became the game of the ordinary people.

The standard rules of the sport had been formulated by the London Football Association and it was implemented all throughout Europe. The London Football Association was founded in 1863.

In the later years different soccer teams had been organized and joined the tournaments. In line with this, more and more European countries had adopted the sport. As the number of people interested in the sport grew, tournaments had been formalized so it was accepted as a sport and was played in the 1900 Olympics.

In 1904 the Federation International de Football Association or FIFA was founded. The FIFA is governing body for international soccer tournaments. In 1930 the 1st World Cup international competition was held.

In 1913, the Americans formed their own soccer team dubbed United States Soccer Federation (USSF). American football is much preferred by the Americans than soccer. This has been one of their famous sports for a long time. They have less interest in the sport soccer.

The mindset of the Americans about the sport has changed with the inclusion of Pele the great Brazilian soccer player with the New York Cosmos team. This didn't take long because of the early retirement of Pele. Later on the Soccer League was dissolved because of its unpopularity among fans.

When the men's world cup was held in the United States in 1994, the Americans became interested in soccer. Today, Americans love soccer so much. It even leads to the formation of the Major League Soccer (MLS).

Christiano Ronaldo Fit And Raring To Start The Next Premiership Season With Man Utd

Manchester United star Portuguese midfielder Christiano Ronaldo says he is raring to go and is as fit as ever ahead of the start of the 2007/2008 Premiership football season as Man Utd prepare their defence of the Premiership title.

Man Utd manager Sir Alex Ferguson has made many big signings ahead of the new season, strengthening the squad somewhat with the acquisitions of Anderson, Nani, Owen Hargreaves and (eventually hopefully) Carlos Tevez.

When asked about the new signings Ronaldo stated that they are all fantastic signings, they will be great for the club and the team – and that he hopes they never leave.

Cristiano Ronaldo meanwhile has been in terrific form at the start of the pre-season, with many dazzling performances on Utd’s 4 day tour of the Far East. Sir Alex Ferguson will surely be a lot happier with the progress the players have made fitness wise this pre-season, after having to endure many of his star players performing tirelessly at least seasons World Cup finals in Germany.

This season around the likes of Rooney, Ronaldo and co will all be fully prepared for the coming up season, after admitting last season that they started feeling the effects of a prolonged season last time around.

Manchester United will be facing nearest rivals Chelsea on Sunday in the Charity Shield football match at Wembley, and the weekend after they will open their Premiership account with a home match against last seasons surprise package Reading.

Ronaldo can’t wait for the new season to begin, and is already looking to build upon the success of last year – which has already seen him crowned PFA Young Player and PFA Player’s Player Of The Year.

"Things are going very good for me," Cristiano Ronaldo told MUTV. "I feel fit and I'm very happy with the way our preparations have gone so far. But I must keep my form going. The Premier League starts soon and I must be ready for that. I hope to play well. My ambition is still the same - I want to play well, score goals and provide assists. I tried to do the same last year and I worked hard to do that. I hope things come good for me."

It remains to be seen how Cristiano Ronaldo can really improve on his performances last season around, but with just a few weeks away from the kick off of the new Premiership season we can’t wait to see how the new-look Manchester United team performs, and whether Christiano Ronaldo can really build on his success of last season.
